November 5, 2022, SalaaMedia Centre for Cultural Studies & Development, in cooperation with Darfur journalists Association and media personnel, supported by Freedom House - Sudan Human Rights Initiative, organized a three-day training workshop addressing Darfur Land Rights,
Justice& Advocacy in El Deain, Eastern Darfur.
The workshop targeted journalists, media personnel, resistance committees and Internally displaced persons (IDPs), in which the trainees and got acquainted with international treaties, land issues, legal rules, land ownership, media coverage of land issues and sensitive reports.
Mr. Sufian El-tigani/ Program Director stated the core objective of training is to raise journalists’ awareness when covering land-related disputes, due to land disputes have always escalated the brutality of the dispute within Darfur region, stressing that in order to reach a democratic transformation we ought to silence the guns and de-intensify land disputes, in particular, Darfur Region.
The trainee and broadcaster Summiah Al-Mardi emphasized that this training is extremely important to journalists and media personnel, in terms of gaining critical information, moreover, helping them with media coverage of land-related issues media coverage, along with coming up a roadmap on various media platforms to resolve land-related misconceptions, in line with land use unless we are aware of land laws.
While the lawyer Osman Barsham pointed out, this workshop tackled land issues from a legal perspective, public and private right according to international charters and laws, besides, provided scientific and legal papers that shall help specialists in several fields concerning land issues, along with legal frameworks.
