Our Story

SalaaMedia is derived from the importance of community, global peace initiatives and academic concepts of "peace". What inspired us to come up with the name SalaaMedia is the (our) strong belief that media has a key role to play in the various processes and stages of peace. Peace does not mean putting an end to wars, conflicts or disputes; it means peaceful coexistence, social coherence and effective social harmony.

Background:

Since 1956 when Sudan got its independence, the country has been undergoing conflicts persistently. The situation resulted in a number of wars, violence and political instability which negatively affected the Sudanese social fabric and development. As a result, divisions among the Sudanese society deepened further and increased the rates of violence.  This compromised the spirit of national unity and undermined the country’s diversity hence creating regional prejudices and non-acceptance of others which led to the secession of South Sudan.

The enthusiasm to bring about peace, stability and development in Sudan motivated a group of Sudanese professionals from different backgrounds to establish SalaaMedia Center. This was after deep reflections and thorough brainstorming since 2013. The Centre was officially registered as an independent, non-governmental, non-profit institution in 2017 under the Federal Ministry of Culture in Sudan.

SalaaMedia Center closely works with a number of activists in journalism/ information, human rights, peace, gender, youth, women and cultural initiatives as stakeholders in achieving peace, transformation, democracy and economic development.

SalaaMedia has got two websites (windows); www.salaamedia.org/center/ for the Center’s activities and www.salaamedia.org for news services, reports, articles and investigations on peace and democratic transformation.
