English for Journalism and Media Program

SalaaMedia invites Sudanese journalists and content creators based in Kampala, Uganda, to apply for an intensive in-class training program: English for Journalism and Media, designed to enhance language proficiency, global reporting skills, and media literacy in English — empowering professionals to elevate their storytelling and reach international audiences.

Program Overview

The program focuses on practical linguistic skills, professional communication within newsrooms, and international media standards, covering:

• Application of news reporting styles in the English language
• Approaches to language translation
• Grammar for print and broadcasting journalists
• Newsroom terminology and specialised vocabulary
• The language style of writing news and features
• Practical application of English to a news story
• Spoken English for media & journalism
• English for text, online, and small screen
• English in editing and production processes
• Writing skills — political, business, sport, art, culture, and entertainment

Training Structure

• Duration: 14-day comprehensive in-class program
• Schedule: 3 weeks total — two weeks of in-class sessions (2 hours per day), and one week to produce and publish a story
• Certification: A certificate of completion will be awarded upon successful participation and completion of the course

Eligibility Criteria

• A Sudanese journalist or content creator (youth, women, and persons with disabilities are highly encouraged to apply)
• Possess a baseline/intermediate knowledge of English
• Have an active platform (blog, social media page, podcast, or news outlet)
• Demonstrate a commitment to professional growth and to attending all sessions
• Be willing to provide feedback on how the program advances your career goals

Selection Criteria (100-Point Scale)

• Profile & Basic Skills (25 pts): Educational background and current language interest
• Relevant Experience (40 pts): Past work in journalism, blogging, or digital content production
• Motivation & Goals (35 pts): Clear professional objectives and eagerness to learn global media standards
